We Know – We’ve Been There Too

For my mother, Barbara, gardening was one of her greatest passions. She would spend countless hours lovingly tending to her gardens, creating magical spaces bursting with vibrancy. She would beam with pride when people passing by stopped to admire the beauty her labor of love produced… spaces that seemed to expand year after year.

A few summers ago, while visiting my  Mom after not seeing her for several months, I noticed something wasn’t right. Her gardens had lost their magic. Instead of seeing lush green velvety grass and a rainbow of blooming flowers, I saw spaces that were overgrown and full of weeds. Mom said she was tired all the time and simply couldn’t keep up with her beloved gardening.

Not long after that visit, we learned the reason for her chronic fatigue. When she was diagnosed with cancer, our family was devastated. We experienced a cascade of emotions and were uncertain about what to do next. I lived thousands of miles away and had a busy career and family of my own. On top of that, I knew very little about how to provide the care my Mom needed.

I was able to work remotely for a while to care for her, but that wasn’t sustainable. I felt utterly overwhelmed and woefully ill-equipped to handle what lay ahead. Fortunately, we found a home care agency that provided professional caregiving services that made all the difference. The caregivers were able to step into the gap and assist Mom with activities of daily living that had become difficult or impossible for her to handle on her own.

That experience gave me tremendous insight into the value of home care and empathy for what families go through when caring for loved ones who are elderly, disabled, or experiencing health issues. In fact, my family’s journey inspired me to start my own home care agency.
