Assisting Hands – Dana Point

Split Shift Caregiving at Assisting Hands® Dana Point

At Assisting Hands® Dana Point, we are proud to offer Split Shift Caregiving, a unique and flexible model designed to better serve seniors living in close proximity to one another, such as within senior living buildings, complexes, or care facilities. This model waives our usual four-hour minimum shift policy, allowing us to provide services to multiple clients with a minimum of one hour per client and additional time billed in 15-minute increments. By efficiently scheduling a single caregiver to serve multiple clients, we deliver personalized care, enhance flexibility, and ensure continuity for both the clients and our caregivers.

How Split Shift Caregiving Works

In this model, a single caregiver delivers individualized care to multiple clients in the same senior complex or building. Rather than requiring one caregiver to spend a full four-hour shift with one client, the caregiver moves between clients based on scheduled needs, providing dedicated care in short bursts. Each client receives a minimum of one hour of care, with the option to add additional care in 15-minute increments.

For example, here’s how a caregiver’s schedule could look:

Client 1

Services Provided: Medication reminders, assistance with grooming and dressing

  • Clock In: 9:00 AM
  • Clock Out: 10:00 AM
  • Billable Time: 1 hour

Client 2

Services Provided: Meal preparation, light housekeeping, and mobility assistance

  • Clock In: 10:15 AM
  • Clock Out: 11:30 AM
  • Billable Time: 1 hour, 15 minutes

Client 3

Services Provided: Help with bathing, companionship, and medication reminders

  • Clock In: 11:45 AM
  • Clock Out: 1:00 PM
  • Billable Time: 1 hour, 15 minutes

In this example, the caregiver provides service to 3 separate clients within a total working time of 4 hours, efficiently moving from one client to the next with minimal downtime. Each client is only billed for the time the caregiver spends providing care, allowing them to receive the specific attention they need without committing to longer shifts.

Benefits for Clients, Caregivers, and the Agency

This innovative model of care offers numerous benefits for clients, caregivers, and Assisting Hands® Dana Point as a whole:

  • Appealing Flexibility for Clients: Clients living in close proximity to one another no longer have to adhere to a strict four-hour minimum for in-home care. This means they can receive short-term assistance with essential daily tasks without paying for services they don’t need. Clients with smaller care requirements can feel comfortable requesting help for an hour or slightly more, with additional time billed in 15-minute increments, making caregiving services more accessible and cost-effective.

  • Continuity and Satisfaction for Caregivers: From a caregiver’s perspective, this model ensures they can complete their full four-hour shift (or longer), working consistently while serving multiple clients. By helping a series of clients in close proximity, caregivers can maximize their efficiency, stay productive, and build meaningful relationships with multiple clients—all while working within a defined and structured schedule. The workload remains manageable, ensuring high-quality care and job satisfaction.

  • Operational Efficiency for the Agency: Split Shift Caregiving allows Assisting Hands® Dana Point to broaden its reach within senior complexes or residential facilities. By serving more clients with fewer caregivers, we improve operational efficiency, reduce travel time, and lower overhead costs. The ability to split shifts between multiple clients also ensures that caregivers are consistently booked and well-utilized while delivering focused and individualized care.

Addressing Potential Complexities

While this model offers many advantages, certain complexities can arise. Scheduling must be carefully managed to ensure that caregivers can transition smoothly between clients without long gaps. Additionally, there may be variations in each client’s care needs, requiring careful coordination to match the right caregiver with multiple clients based on their skills and availability. However, with proper planning, these challenges can be easily overcome, leading to a highly efficient and responsive system.

In Summary

Split Shift Caregiving at Assisting Hands® Dana Point is an innovative, client-focused model that provides the flexibility and efficiency needed to support seniors living in close proximity to each other. By offering the convenience of shorter, customized shifts, we ensure that every client receives the care they need without the burden of long-term time commitments. This model benefits everyone involved.  Clients receive affordable and focused care, caregivers enjoy fulfilling and structured work, and the agency maximizes its ability to serve the community.
